راجر ایبرت در ۱۸ ژوئن ۱۹۴۲ در اربانا در ایالت ایلینوی به دنیا آمد. او در ۱۵ سالگی، گزارش مسابقات ورزشی دبیرستانش را برای یک روزنامهٔ محلی پوشش می داد و سپس سردبیر روزنامهٔ دانشجویی دانشگاهش شد. ایبرت از سوی دانشگاه کیپ تاون در آفریقای جنوبی یک سال بورسیه شد و سپس در دانشگاه شیکاگو روی مدرک دکترا در زمینهٔ زبان انگلیسی کار کرد. او در سال ۱۹۹۲ با چاز همل اسمیت، وکیل سیاهپوست، ازدواج کرد ــ کسی که ایبرت او را «واقعیت بزرگ زندگی» اش خواند. وی در سال ۲۰۰۲ به سرطان تیروئید مبتلا شد و در پی عمل جراحی، فک پایین و توانایی سخن گفتنش را از دست داد.
