• lien chan was elected premier of taiwan in 1993, the first native taiwanese to serve in that post. he became a member of the kuomintang (kmt) central committe in 1983. he was minister of communications from 1981 to 1987, vice premier from 1987 to 1988, minister of foreign affairs from 1989 to 1990, and governor of taiwan province from 1990 to 1993. born: 1936.
